Students read a three-page nonfiction excerpt from Gretel Ehrlich's "About Men" and a four-page excerpt from Zane Grey's Desert Gold (included).
"About Men" describes the characteristics and personality traits of cowboys. The excerpt from Desert Gold introduces the main character (Cameron) who happens upon a stranger in the desert. Students have to choose which character proves to be a quintessential cowboy based on the information from "About Men." This worksheet is a paragraph-by-paragraph and sentence-by-sentence guide to writing this argumentative essay. It can also be adapted for other literature.
*Note: This is a VERY basic argumentative essay guide. I use it as the first argument essay for my at-risk classes. (The counter-claim is not included in this guide.) If you want a more advanced argumentative essay guide, check out my argumentative guide for "A Problem"!
