This unit is on writing an argumentative essay. I use it after we have read "The Giver" but any other novel or situation could substitute. We discuss the basic themes of "The Giver" and that usually helps them discover topics that they're passionate about.
I use this unit in a junior level English resource class, but it could be adapted for use in any English class in junior or high school. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to complete but that is solely dependent upon the interest and needs of the students.
