The presentation guides students through the structure of a five paragraph argumentative essay. This format can be condensed or expanded, and uses a hamburger analogy for easy reference. It explains in detail the following elements of an argument: claim, reasons, evidence, opposing claim, and counterclaim.
The sample essay and sample essay outline is highlighted accordingly and is a helpful exemplar for students to analyze before writing their own essays. The activity I implement is to have students highlight the claim, reasons, evidence, opposing claim, and evidence before I show them the final highlighted essay.
I have provided PDFs versions of the exemplar essay and presentation within the folder, in addition to the Powerpoint presentation and Word documents.
Additional fun suggestion: Burger King offers free crowns, so I grab a few and award them to the "top essays" (Burger Kings and Queens) in each class period.
