This is the second packet in the Argumentative Writing Series with a continued focus on Social Media. In this packet we focus on writing a Counterclaim Paragraph. We have found this paragraph to be particularly difficult when teaching students to write an argumentative essay. This paragraph is what differentiates between a persuasive essay and an argumentative essay.
A counterclaim paragraph is composed of a counterclaim statement supported with evidence and an analysis, a rebuttal statement and the claim restated. We have provided mini lessons, activities, and additional practice to facilitate the writing process and master writing a claim, counterclaim, and rebuttal statement.
We also provide opportunities for the students to practice paraphrasing, that was reviewed in the previous packet (Social Media Packet #1).
The ultimate goal of this packet is to have the students write a counterclaim paragraph on their own with the use of various graphic organizers and outlines.
This packet is used in conjunction with the website: www.procon.org. Textual evidence can be found on this site.
We have also included a Lesson Plan to go along with this Packet. The Lesson Plan breaks down the packet into mini lessons, group work, guided practice and independent work. The Lesson Plan is intended to give you step by step directions as to how you can present this packet to your students.
Here are the links to the related Social Media packets (Packets #1 and #3).
All packets will assist in breaking down the writing process and focusing on the underpinnings of language that will allow our students to successfully write an argumentative essay.
