ALL KILLER - NO FILLER!

This is the all the materials you need to teach a killer, do you hear me, KILLER lesson where students will identify and practice sorting 4 different addition strategies.

The strategies:
"Count On"
"Doubles"
"Near Doubles"
"Make Ten"

What I love about this lesson is that it reviews these 4 strategies without having the teacher name them directly: instead, you place examples of each strategy on separate areas and then ask the students to create more examples, without naming the actual strategy. It's a killer KILLER lesson, and the best part is that this is set out in exquisite detail, including materials for your kids to conduct the investigation on their own.

What will you find in here?

• A "near cutesy" cover, but look, it's Arne Duncan approved!
• A complete lesson plan from beginning to end, including follow ups and differentiation tips.
• A set of large demonstration sorting cards.
* A set of large blank demonstration cards for kids to make their own examples to share during the lesson.
• A set of individual groups cards for kids to sort on their own.
• A precision sorting mat of the four strategies.
* Blank cards with empty equations AND a named strategy so that kids can make their own examples.
• A 1 page homework assignment which reviews the 4 strategies AND has the students practice the "near double" strategy by inspecting 20 different problems and only completing those that are actual examples of a "near double."

Meets Common Core Standard 1.06:

Add and subtract within 20.

6. Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
