The Around the Neighborhood Supply Kit includes digital download of our videos, lesson plans, and links to training pages to support educators of all backgrounds! This project is designed to engage & support teachers who want to engage students around Black History Month. It introduces students to artists of color, Harlem, and in the case of the older students, The Great Migration.
This project is a 4-lesson project where students study the life & work of the African-American artist Jacob Lawrence, specifically looking at his paintings of Harlem. Older students are also introduced to the Great Migration. This lesson also introduces other artists of color, as well as includes recommendations for books to complement the project.
Students create sketches of their own neighborhood and finish by creating a collage, similar to how Jacob Lawrence used his neighborhood (Harlem) as inspiration for his paintings.
