My students took a trip around the world to review reference concepts: dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, Internet, almanac, and atlas! Paired with a book or event, students reviewed each concept with a lesson and activity.
I created a Kahoot! pre and a separate post-test to gauge students' learning. The links are included in this bundle.
Atlas: Biblioburro - a great story about how rural Columbian children receive their reading material! Paired with a Pinterest page filled with images and short videos about Luis Soriano. Students then use a short paragraph to find names to locate mobile libraries around the world and create a world map, complete with symbols and map key!
Internet Search Engines: Using the kid friendly "Kid Rex" search engines, students find out the end of the story of The Librarian of Basra and her library in Iraq.
Almanac/Dictionary: It's off to Alaska and the Iditarod! Students compare Alaskan facts to their state using the almanac, then it's on to the dictionary to find out the meaning of common sled-dog racing words! Students also use fact monster online to figure out the latest about the Iditarod as well!
Thesaurus: We meet Eratosthenes, The Librarian Who Measured the Earth, in ancient Greece, then use the thesaurus to find synonyms that appear in statements about the scholar.
The packet contains a lesson plan for each concept mentioned above, as well as everything you'll need for the follow up activities! All you need to provide are the reference materials. My students had a blast with this unit and we enjoyed our trip around the world!
