Product Description
The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Around the World with a Glass Slipper." In my progression, this would be week 2 however they do not have to be taught all together or in this particular order. I have laid out the entire unit by region; this is the stories from Africa. This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and eight student activity pages. There is also a link to Brainpopjr.com if you have access to it. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.

The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.

The focus standards are:

RL.1.9 Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.
RL.1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
RL.1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
RI.1.5 Know and use various text features to locate key facts or information in a text

During this week students will locate the continent that they live in as well as Europe (can be removed if you did not teach the previous lesson) and Africa. They will learn about ancient Egypt and define new terms to help them understand the literature. They will read The Egyptian Cinderella and Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters and determine if they are folktales, what the moral of the stories are and compare and contrast them to each other and/or previous versions of Cinderella read.

The books I used for the lesson are (these could be changed)

DK First Atlas
Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe
The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo
