Product Description
The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Around the World with a Glass Slipper." In my progression, this would be week 6 and is a culmination week about art from various countries; however they do not have to be taught all together or in this particular order. I laid out the unit by region and students will revisit some places they already learned about some new places to study masks. This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and five student activity pages. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.

The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.

The focus standards are:

SL.1.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
SL.1.1c Ask questions to clear up any confusion about the topics and texts under discussion.
SL.1.2 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
SL.1.3 Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood.
SL.1.4 Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
SL.1.6 Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation.

Students will learn about masks from different cultures and describe those using complete sentences. The students will end the unit by creating their own masks.

The books I used for the lesson are (these could be changed)

“Traditions Around The World: Masks” by Amanda Earl
“Ancient Egypt: A First Look at the People of the Nile” by Bruce Strachan
