Product Description
This play can be used to enhance any classroom lesson about slavery in the colonies or for anything else you wish. It takes about 15-20 minutes to do the play and the gavel activity at the end. Or, you can structure an entire class around it.

In my American History classes we are taking a closer look at slavery. This play traces the origin of slavery in the Virginia colony at Jamestown. Thus it is the beginning of using African slaves in the English colonies.

Using historical plays and skits gets students engaged and reenacting history! This play is based upon eyewitness accounts and historical resources, especially Jamestown Rediscovery and the National Park Service. All of the characters in the play were actual people involved in this event.

At the end of the play, I have my students read, one by one, the change from not having slavery in Virginia, to the ever increasing limited freedoms for Africans, to outright codified law in regard to the legalization of lifetime servitude. Again, students read one by one, they stand and when each finishes I pound a gavel. The rest of the class is silent. It is pretty powerful. Then we have some time for questions.

Most of my plays have a touch of humor. This play is more dramatic and serious. If you'd like to see my complete collection, please visit my store on TpT.
