This is the first or second project we complete in art class in grades 9 and 10.
They do this after learning about the "Elements and Principles of art"
Students create an ART PORTFOLIO which we store in-class, to keep all their artworks that don't fit in their sketchbooks.
They're cheap! We make them out of two pieces of white bristol board, and clear packing tape, and the students use whatever materials they want to design it.
The project is really scaffolded, so they understand the creative process.
In their sketchbooks, before starting:
-They do a mindmap first (this becomes the cover page of their sketchbook - it's a bonus because it gets them started in their sketchbooks, but you could always do it just on regular paper)
-They do 3 mini thumbnail sketches to play with composition
-They create a list of materials they want to use
THEN they pick a final design and go for it on their bristol board.
NOTE - for grade 9's we do the bristol board cut in half, smaller ones, so they're less intimidated by it.
There's also a rubric included with the project - to make marking easy.
