This is a REALLY fast, really cheap (!!) art project that you can do with limited supplies.
I usually do it near the beginning of the semester - as the first or second project. It really opens them up to being creative, and thinking about the MESSAGE of their art.
It also helps because it's based around words - so it's more approachable.
All you need is:
(if you have a "Recycling Depot" in your area, they often pull books aside and keep them, so you can get them for free)
If you have more materials, perfect! I make it a mixed media project - so students can use pencil crayons, ink, paint, whatever they want.
This handout goes through the steps in the project
*****and also includes a rubric, for easy marking.
(there's also a self-assessment portion included in the rubric where they give themselves a mark / write one thing they need to improv upon when it comes to the creative process and work habits)
NOTE - this works AMAZING if you do it cross-curricular with an English class - they blackout the poem, the art class designs it. Genius stuff happens!
