As an art student, your skill in dealing with art must progress beyond the "I like it" or "I don't like it" stages associated with "gut" feelings. Full appreciation of art demands open-mindedness from the observer. Willingness to become involved and to free oneself from previous notions or expectations of what the artwork should be like is needed. Considered, sensitive observation and analysis can provide a solid foundation on which to build interpretation and judgment. No one is an absolute authority on the meaning or value of any work of art. Sometimes the images presented for the spectator are at variance with his/her prior experience. Readiness to accept the unexpected from art provides the climate for appreciation.
This hand out is in four parts:
1. Extended definitions (Senior Art)
2. Shorter version (Junior Art)
3. Fill in the blank Art Criticism for students to complete
4. Art Criticism Assessment sheet for teachers
Students should have a strong grasp of the art vocabulary - elements and principles of art and design, and art and design strategies to be able to express themselves when completing an Art Criticism exercise.
