I use this project in grade 9 or 10 art because it's so good for students to build confidence and make amazing artworks that put their pencil shading skills to use.
This is the intro "inspiration" powerpoint that I show to start off the project.
-how to pick an image with lots of value, not high contrast
-how to use the pencils/tools to create image
They basically have to cut an image in half, and draw the ONE side of the face. This way it's less intimidating, and they really have to work at matching the values in the original.
Also in my shop is a rubric for this project / a mini critique sheet that can be really helpful to complete the day BEFORE the project is due.
TIP - have students get creative in HOW they cut the image. I always require them to have at least one eye/part of a nose/part of a mouth (to demonstrate enough techniques)
Also in my shop - a helpful little intro into drawing specific features of the face. I get them to do this worksheet in their sketchbook before starting this project.
Helps them focus!
