Art is ... Simple Contour & Line Drawing (5 pages) with Famous Art Examples
You will download one zip file that has 5 jpg pages inside.
This is an introduction to contour and line drawing. "Contour" in French means "outline." So, basically contour drawing is drawing around the outside of the subject/figure. Sometimes, it can include a little more but basically it follows the outline.
My college drawing teacher used to tell us to visually follow the outline while drawing on your paper, but not to take up your pencil or even look at what you are drawing. You must imagine you are a caterpillar slowly climbing around the outline. You will be surprised at how this method will help your students find the essence of the figure!
An extension to do after the small drawings would be to use a 12 x 18 paper and provide a model in the center of the room. Another student, or even a simple chair would be a good subject. Because drawing paper may be a scarcity in some schools, try using butcher paper cut into appropriate large sizes. Use both sides!
4 Contour line drawings by Picasso, Miro, Alexander Calder
with a blank space for the student to practice drawing the example.
4 Contour line drawings by Keith Haring, Warhol and Dr. Suess with
a blank space by each.
There are 4 animal figures on this page. They have very well defined outlines. The student is to draw the contour line of each animal in the blank space.
Silhouettes of famous cartoons. Again students are to draw the contour outline of each cartoon.
8 spaces for students to practice their contour line drawings.
Don't forget to tell them to turn their papers over and try to make a larger contour drawing on the back.
Contour Drawing differs from "contour lines" used in topographic maps, in that it is a specific technique for art.
I have used copyrighted artists' art work and photos in accordance with FAIR USE in education. Learning how to draw contours is helped by having artists' examples to see how easy they make it. These visual references are not always available in an art room, so having them on these worksheets is invaluable for the student.
