This collaborative project makes a really fun first project of the year for beginning high school art students. Students review art elements and principles of design while creating large collaborative drawings with basic drawing tools like graphite, charcoal, conte crayons and optional color chalk pastels. I provide a sample script as well as samples and list of materials. My students have a blast with this because I also require them to move around the room and mix up who they work with. This not only allows students to get to know each other, but also give them a chance to separate their egos from their art making, since each drawing is a mashup of several students' work. These large drawings get a lot of attention when hanging in the hallways.
