I developed this lesson for students in 5th grade. The primary purpose is to introduce shading and to demonstrate how shadow can turn a 2-d object (circle) into a
3-d object (sphere). The finished product will be a form of sun catcher that is meant to be displayed on a window or near some other light source.
In addition, this project is a great companion lesson or activity to a science, geography, solar system, continents and hemispheres.
In addition if you choose to utlize google earth, as outlined in the lesson it becomes a wonderfully interactive way to use technology in the classroom.
This lesson plan should take no more that 3 classes.
