This is a really challenging project that I give for senior grades 11 and 12 art classes to prepare them for working with ABSTRACT ART.
They love this project every time we do it - it's a really neat creative process!
This project is really open, and involves mixed media - so they can chose whatever materials they wish for each of the 4 final artworks (sometimes I change it to 3, depending on the time).
This handout walks them through the project:
-they start by picking any subject matter, and sketching it to start to experiment and explore materials and ways to abstract it
-they create 4 final artworks moving from realism, to moderately obscured, to abstraction (they can be done on whatever surfaces they want, using whatever materials they want)
Also included in this is a page with student exemplars, to get them inspired.
There's also a rubric to help make marking easy.
Hope it helps!
This is a great one - students get three unique pieces from one idea...it really shows them the steps of the creative process and how to work through an idea.
This is KEY for senior level students to understand - especially if they're moving on to art in post-secondary.
