Thinking about creating a piece inspired by Louise Nevelson?
Start with the 3 activities contained within this lesson:
Understanding Louise Nevelson:
Activity #1- Find-a-Fact Game
Students conduct research in cooperative groups, competing against one another. Each source they use is worth a certain amount of points. Students teach each other about Louise Nevelson, her artwork, background, and interesting facts in Activity #1.
Activity #2- Sketch-It-Out!
Students analyze and re-draw a piece of Nevelson's art (Dawn's Presence- Two Columns). Not only does this help their observational skills, it helps them see what she saw!
Activity #3- Homework
Students begin searching in their everyday life for objects to use on their portion of the group installation that they will create in class.
*Bonus Materials: Final Installation Project Images & Art Show Description Sheet
Note: These are introductory activities into the life of Louise Nevelson. This file contains final project images of an installation sculpture, but does not contain resources for how to build a Nevelson Sculpture. Teachers should review the resources at their disposal such as found objects, glue types, hammer/nails depending on the grade/ability levels of their students.
