Art History is a great way to get kids talking about art! Assign an art history period, and then give them this simple sheet to fill out about an art history period and a famous artist from that period. You can have each student do a different period or do one period as a class and each student or group gets an artist.
There are videos online that you can show to introduce students to the periods, or go to an online art gallery like the AGO, the National Gallery of Canada or MOMA for some information.
Once they are done, have them copy a piece of art by that artist and try to match colour and technique. Use the sample and the research to present to the class and have them record the information presented on the next sheet titled "Art History presentation worksheet." It's similar to a jigsaw, so that by the end of the learning cycle they have learned many interesting facts about a group of artists.
