This is a fantastic intro project for senior students to review composition, as well as the elements and principles of art and design.
It really pushes their creativity to the limit right off the bat - and gets them experimenting and exploring.
It's called "12 Squares" project because students are literally designing 12 mini artworks, all around one chosen theme.
They can pick whatever simple theme/topic they want (scorpions, clocks, ships, bees etc) and have to create 15 mini mixed media works of art (3 inches X 3 inches).
Then, through the process of editing, they pick their best 12 to mount creatively together.
Best part is - it's a cheap project, but they're always so successful. Students REALLY need to push their experimentation to the limit.
It sets a nice tone for the class, and students really get a lot out of it - they learn a lot about composition and using their visual eye.
Also included is a rubric to make marking easy for you.
