This is the first major project we complete in art class in grades 9 and 10.
It gets them being creative right off the bat (it's all about identity) and many students say this is their favourite project. They have pride walking into class with their art bags - and other students are always asking them in the halls to see them :)
They do this after learning about the "Elements and Principles of art"
Students decorate their canvas ART BAGS which they keep all their materials in for art class throughout the year
- I buy the unbleached canvas zipper pouch version that's cheap from the local art supplier, but you can find variations at the Dollar Store etc. A tote bag would even work!
The project is really scaffolded, so they understand the creative process.
In their sketchbooks, before starting:
-They do a mindmap first (I make this the first two-page cover spread in their sketchbooks - they turn out fantastic! This also gets them working in their sketchbooks right off the bat, which is so important)
-They do 3 mini thumbnail sketches to play with composition and the elements and principles
-They create a list of materials they want to use
THEN they pick a final design for their bag.
- a rubric to make marking easy
-a MIND MAP POWERPOINT - to get them inspired
-THUMBNAIL DRAWINGS POWERPOINT(a key concept for the whole course)!
(everything you need to do this project - from start to finish)
Also in my shop!
