There's nothing duller than reading a description of art and design styles to students - - get them interested and engaged by helping them learn to look at paintings for themselves. This 17 slide PowerPoint presentation contains two parts that can be used separately or together: the first part includes slides of well known paintings that have strong value patterns so that students can see how artists use light and dark areas to create a mood, strengthen a composition, add drama, and so forth. The second part contains a hands-on short art lesson on making value sketches using pencil and paper.
Each part runs about 20-25 minutes for a total of 50 minutes. Students really have fun learning to look at art and then make their own value sketches.
