Drawing people, like all drawing, starts with observation.

These art lessons present three different drawing techniques for human figures: observation, contour, and gesture drawing. Students are taught to look carefully at shapes, lines, and the proportions essential for a reasonably realistic drawing. They also focus on shape, contour, color, and movement. Each lesson can be extended to include additional art concepts and all are easily differentiated.

With these lessons, children can learn how to observe and draw people with personality. They won’t need to ever draw stick figures again!

Lessons included are:

Learn to Draw People focuses on observation. Introduces steps designed to help students observe the shapes, lines, and proportionality essential for a reasonably realistic drawing. Includes art reflection worksheet.

Squiggly People are quick, fun, and fanciful. Introduces gesture drawing, a technique that strives to capture the essence of a subject. Inspired by artist Keith Haring’s fanciful figures. Includes art reflection worksheet.

Whimsical People focuses on shape, contour, color, and movement. Fun and fanciful, also inspired by artist Keith Haring. Includes biography of Keith Haring and student response worksheet.

Each lesson includes the following:

- a list of art concepts and skills addressed
- a list of materials needed
- targeted art and related vocabulary
- detailed steps for introducing the lesson
- suggestions for read alouds, where applicable
- suggestions for looking at art, where applicable
- step-by-step directions for art-making
- ideas for extending or varying the lesson
- ideas for looking at and discussing student art
- ideas for connecting the activity to other curricular areas
- at least one writing extension

This resource also includes a description of the National Core Visual Arts Anchor Standards and an overview of ways Art education supports other areas of the curriculum.

Because I teach in California, each lesson also includes a list of the California Visual Arts Standards addressed for suggested grade levels. Please note that listed grade levels are suggestions only; any of these lessons can be simplified or made more complex to work for any elementary grade.
