Learn about surrealism with this fun and easy printmaking lesson. Students can draw portraits using the grid method and then print a variety of surrealism style selfies to demonstrate mastery of several national art standards. The book "Magritte's Marvelous Hat" is a wonderful starting point for this lesson, but not required if the teacher is willing to use their own prints.
A two minute video clip accompanies this lesson (link to video embedded in the pdf) so your students can view the entire process from start to finish. The video is set to music with titles, so you can explain things in your own voice to personalize the lesson.
A grid drawing worksheet is provided to assist students in the portrait drawing portion. This lesson could take 3-5 sessions depending on the length of your classes, their ability level and the number of prints you want them to make. A great lesson for early finishers, as they can simply make more prints.
