The Drum Dream girl is a beautifully illustrated story that addresses discrimination. This multidisciplinary lesson connects to music and poetry. The major art objectives addressed are pattern and positive and negative space.
You will receive three professionally lesson plans to help you start, teach and close the activity. Each plan includes the relevant objectives and NEW national art standards with related Common Core standards when applicable. I have included the haiku helper syllable worksheet, pattern identification worksheet and three drum patterns that you can print on cardstock to make tracers for younger students.. There are a few in-progress photos of my students engaged in the project. This has been classroom tested at the second grade level. A video link is included to watch the drum creation from start to finish.
While scratch art is the intended project, this could easily transfer to drawings, watercolor resist and other media.
