Product Description
Integrate art and science with this observation drawing still life lesson designed to help students develop and refine their observation skills.

This art lesson teaches students to look closely at lines and shapes and the spatial relationship of objects to each other. It focuses on secondary colors and requires students to make thoughtful color choices for their drawings.

A collection of common classroom objects can be used for this lesson, or specialty objects like vases of flowers or other natural objects can be brought into the classroom for more science-oriented observations.

Extend the lesson with a comparison of still life drawings and paintings from different time periods, a writing activity, a plant observation drawing, or by taking students outside for plein aire drawing.

This lesson includes:

- a list of art concepts and skills addressed
- a list of materials needed
- targeted art and related vocabulary
- suggestions for looking at art by Henri Matisse
- detailed steps for introducing the lesson
- step-by-step directions for the art activity
- ideas for extending or varying the lesson
- ideas for looking at and discussing student art
- suggestions for cross-curricular connections and a writing extension
- tips for setting up a still life for observation

Also included is a resource sheet: Observation Drawing - A Few Tips.

This comprehensive art lesson is designed to teach art appreciation, artist behavior, and art analysis.

Because I teach in California, this lesson also includes a list of the California Visual Arts Standards addressed for suggested grade levels. Please note that listed grade levels are suggestions only; any of these lessons can be simplified or made more complex to work for any elementary grade.
