Product Description
This color-mixing art lesson is a creative alternative to making or coloring Valentines. It introduces Pop Art by artist Wayne Thiebaud and heart paintings by Jim Dine and focuses on the elements of art: shape, color, pattern and texture.

Hearts are popular shapes with children, who often add them to drawings in which they serve no compositional purpose. In these compositions, hearts are the only subject rather than a random addition to art work.

This lesson includes two suggestions for writing extensions and a suggestion for extending the art appreciation component.

This lesson is bundled with three other lessons in Art Lessons With Hearts.

The lesson includes the following:

- a list of art concepts and skills addressed
- national visual arts standards information
- a list of materials needed
- targeted art and related vocabulary
- detailed steps for introducing the lesson
- ideas for looking at and discussing art work by Wayne Thibaud and Jim Dine
- directions for art-making
- ideas for varying the lesson
- suggestions for writing and art appreciation extensions

Also included for teacher and student reference:
• a printable color wheel
• a page of information about Pop Art
informational text reading/response printables:
--- About Wayne Thiebaud - informational text artist biography
--- Thinking about Wayne Thiebaud - a “draw and write” response worksheet

This art lesson is designed to teach art appreciation, artist behavior, and art analysis, and to foster authentic art-making and art education.

National Core Visual Arts Standards are listed at the beginning of the lesson.

Because I teach in California, this lesson also includes a list of the California Visual Arts Standards addressed for suggested grade levels. Please note that listed grade levels are suggestions only; any of these lessons can be simplified or made more complex to work for any elementary grade.

Other art lessons in the bundle:
Patterned Hearts
Warm and Cool Textured Hearts
Primary Colors Pop Art Hearts

Creating Art With Kids and Share2Learn lessons and resources are designed to foster student creativity, choice, and independence, and to encourage authentic art-making. Consideration is given to developmental appropriateness, differentiation possibilities, and teacher individuality. For this reason, directions are general, expectations are open-ended, and clip art on student pages is kept to a minimum.
