This math-connected, no-prep art lesson can be used to introduce the concept of a non-representational art. Students create an abstract composition using only one shape, with as many variations and colors of that shape as they desire.
The lesson only requires construction paper, scissors and glue. Teachers might provide shape templates for students to use to create the first shape, but after that it is intended that all work is done entirely with scissors.

Because I teach in California, this lesson also includes a list of the California Visual Arts Standards addressed for suggested grade levels. Please note that listed grade levels are suggestions only; any of these lessons can be simplified or made more complex to work for any elementary grade.
