This math-connected art lesson focuses on shape as an element of art and gives students fine motor practice as they use one geometric shape to create a repeating design.
This is a beginning art lesson for Kindergartners and other young children, especially those still learning about qualities of simple geometric shapes. The basic activity is simple, but it can be enhanced with more sophisticated media such as watercolor or oil pastels, and suggestions for additional creative extensions are included.
The lesson is introduced with a read aloud, including observation and identification of simple geometric shapes.
Included with this resource is an art reflection worksheet suitable for Kindergarten and other emerging writers.

Because I teach in California, this lesson also includes a list of the California Visual Arts Standards addressed for suggested grade levels. Please note that listed grade levels are suggestions only; any of these lessons can be simplified or made more complex to work for any elementary grade.
