This project is ALWAYS such a hit with the senior grades because it's so challenging, but in the end they create amazing prints.
(bonus - it's cheap - I use bristol board - and can be done quite quickly!)
It asks them to create a portrait that focuses on VALUE, and to create this through stamping techniques.
Some suggestions are that they create carved stamps from white erasers, from pieces of cork, from their thumbprints - you could get them to use any of these ideas, or just stick to one option. Some students also come up with their own super creative ideas!
They then, using an ink pad, create a portrait by layering the stamps up to create value and dimension.
They turn out awesome!
It can easily be done as part of a printmaking unit or as part of a drawing unit.
-a handout for the project
