In this activity, students analyze a piece of artwork and write their responses to focused artistic questions. It can be used in a myriad of ways. Perhaps, your class is headed on a field trip to a local art museum and you want each child to critically consider one piece of artwork. A simple cardboard and binder clip makeshift clipboard would do the trick so students could carry this around with them. This activity could be used as an art appreciation activity in an art class. Some teachers could use this activity to include cross-curricular components to social studies regional or cultural studies. Additionally, it would make an excellent writing center activity, encouraging students to look critically at a projected or printed work and write their thoughts about it. Perhaps, the sharing that occurs later would be the most significant part of this lesson, encouraging children to share their ideas with one another. Any online museum will provide wonderful artistic masterpieces that could be used in conjunction with this activity.
