This is part of the intro to sketchbook that I do within the first week of the students receiving their sketchbooks.

These are REALLY experimental and open...it gets students used to the idea that sketchbooks aren't just for finished artworks, but are also for experimentation and playing with materials.
-collage texts onto the page
-cut into a page and see what happens
-trade sketchbooks with someone to complete background
-let pieces of paper fall, paste down
I find that a lot of them get "stuck" - especially in senior grades. These open them up to new ideas about backgrounds, materials, etc.
You could have students complete all of them, or sometimes (depending on time), I assign them to pick just 5 of their own.
They have fun - and it opens up new avenues for final artworks!
