This project is a perfect substitute art lesson because it is so easy to introduce and requires very few materials (drawing paper, pencils, erasers, and markers). The lesson plan includes a detailed step-by-step procedure sheet that will guide the substitute teacher throughout the teaching process. Through handouts, students will learn how to manipulate line in creating a snake that appears to be wrapped around a tree branch. Also, the students will create areas of pattern using line or shape, as well as color. The resulting artwork will be extremely illustrative.
There is very little to do to prepare this lesson for a substitute teacher. Simply print the PowerPoint (be sure to print enough student handouts), complete the schedule/information sheet, and print your attendance sheets. It will be that simple! This lesson is one that can be included in an emergency art class substitute bin or used for a scheduled absence.
