I absolutely love using this method to explain successful art to my elementary students (can be adapted for middle and HS). Basically, I tell my students that ART is like CAKE–and who doesn't like cake?!
The ELEMENTS OF ART are the ingredients.
The PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN are the recipes we use to organize the Elements.
The bowl is the PROCESS–painting, sculpture, collage, etc.
The cake is our ARTWORK on a plate--the plate says MEANING on it, because all great art has meaning beneath it!
This package comes with printables of the PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN, large enough to print and laminate for a bulletin board, for students to use during table work, or to display as you teach a lesson. Also included is a smaller version of each element, that can be printing and added to sketchbooks or folders for students to refer to as they plan their own works of art.
The files are PDF files that show each element on a recipe card (like recipes for making cake) and has a visual example of BALANCE, RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT, EMPHASIS, PROPORTION, PATTERN, UNITY, AND VARIETY.
Please check out my shop to purchase/bundle all the cards to make a interactive board.
