Product Description
(70 pages, 33,000 words) Darkness at Noon, perhaps the greatest political novel of the 20th century, is a novel of ideas, Koestler examining the psychology of the revolutionary mind, specifically, why so many revolutionaries during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s were willing to confess to crimes of which they were completely innocent, knowing that they were destined to receive a slug of lead at the base of the skull. It is a novel rich in symbolism and in religious, political, philosophical and literary allusion, a scathing indictment of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat, the interim period between capitalism and communism. The central character, Nicholas Salmanovich Rubashov, has served the Party faithfully for forty years, but now that he has been arrested and thrown in prison, he is forced to re-examine his relationship to the Party and to question his political actions. This commentary provides a deep analysis of the structure and meaning of the novel and draws some parallels to George Orwell's 1984, comparing, in particular, the interrogation tactics of Gletkin, Ivanov and O'Brien. I hope you enjoy this commentary; I welcome your comments and suggestions.
