Wow! Students Love This Play So Much My Male Students Will Take on Female Roles!

All lessons are labeled by day so each one will be easy to follow, which includes the handouts.

Daily Lessons
This Curriculum Unit includes pre-reading activities, reading comprehension questions, a double-entry journal assignment, a day-by-day reading guide, quizzes, informational articles, handouts, PowerPoints, an essay assignment, a unit test, and answer keys..

There is also a lesson in which students will read Jonathan Edward’s Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. This lesson helps students to understand the restrictive and repressive Puritan lifestyle.

It is too funny to see the scared expressions on students’ faces when we watch a YouTube video that features an audio of Edwards’ sermon and a fiery background :-) !

During this unit, students will understand how the concepts of repression, fear, religion, faulty logic, and revenge all play a role in the downfall of the play’s tragic hero, John Proctor.

Students really enjoy the lesson on logical fallacies as I have to prove to them that we too often think just like the Puritans do with the use of modern day examples!

There are different ways to approach “The Crucible.” The play can be taught as a modern day tragedy or as an allegory for McCarthyism, which was Arthur Miller’s true purpose in writing this Jerry Springer style play!

Honestly, this is my eleventh graders’ favorite literary work to read in English III.

Personal Fav!
My favorite lesson is Day 6! Students will read an informational article which will cover a group of individuals that are considered victims of modern day witch hunts such as Muslim Americans and welfare recipients. Students will give presentations based on their topic.

The class discussion regarding these issues are lively and students are able to make real life connections to the play.

It is amazing to watch as students finally understand how we, similar to the Puritan community in The Crucible, look rather absurd whenever we stereotype others based on misconceptions!

The movie which features Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder is a plus!

*Please note that I cannot offer the full video. The video can be purchased on Amazon if you would like for your students to view it which I highly recommend.
