Use this article analysis guide to help students engage while reading informational text.
This file contains a one page graphic organizer that creates a structure for organized note taking. It is ideal for articles dealing with the social sciences and helps students categorize information into six categories:
When I teach using this graphic organizer I emphasize that not every category will be used equally, and that some may not be used at all. Students enjoy using it because it helps them to follow the article and learn from it, yet it doesn't require copious amounts of note taking. As a teacher I enjoy using it because students are expected to extract information on their own and aren't simply looking for one word answers to questions.
The great thing about it is that it can be used with articles from many different sources. For example, I use it for articles from National Geographic and excerpts from textbooks.
