One reading and writing strategy that can be used in math class is an Article GIST. The teacher reads aloud an article about a consumer math topic as students follow along. At the end, the students write a GIST, or a 20 word summary about the article. Students should answer the following in their GIST: Who, What, Where, When, Why or How.
