This is an article from Huff Post that addresses and refutes traditional reasons for why teen reading may be censored. I used it when we were reading Fahrenheit 451, and it would also be a good pick for Banned Books Week in September. I have adapted it for my version of Kelly Gallagher's Article of the Week program:

●learning objectives for each facet of the lesson

●five slides with sentence stems and questions to promote academic language

●strategies for staging a “debate” and developing speaking skills by asking students to agree or disagree on issues that prepare them for the content of the article

●clean copy of the article with margins for student annotations and detailed instructions on how to teach students to add “layers” to their thinking by reading and annotating with different purposes

●instructions for how to guide students to write questions according to Costa’s levels of questions (an AVID strategy) with suggested questions for each article

●format for student write-ups

●scoring rubric for annotations and write up

●detailed lesson plan to help you differentiate instruction and deliver a pedagogically sound lesson that addresses multiple common core standards for reading and writing

I assign an Article of the Week every Monday. At first, the majority of the reading and writing take place in the classroom, and we spent 2-3 hours on each article. After completing a few together, I now assign one on Mondays and the annotations and write-up are due the following Monday. All directions are explicit. This lesson hits several common core standards for reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It would make you look like a rock star for a lesson evaluation and could also be left as a sub plan.
