This resource is based on the concept of Article of the Week created by Kelly Gallagher. The article has been adapted by Newsela staff and is about the twentieth anniversary of the publishing of Harry Potter.
This resource seeks to help upper elementary classrooms implement Article of the Week in the classroom. This article is a Lexile level of 830 and according to Newsela, this is a 5th grade article. The questions we have created can be scaled up or down depending on your students. The STAAR stems used for the multiple choice questions do come from 5th grade.
What is included:
• Three different variations of the same article
-Option 1 includes blank space for students to take notes and guided reading
questions to answer.
-Option 2 includes boxes for “chunking” text into main ideas and guided reading
questions to answer.
-Option 3 includes the questions along the margin to help guide readers as they go
through the article.
*** Please note – all 3 options include the guided reading questions. It is your decision as to how your students answer those questions.
• Open-ended response questions
• STAAR-aligned multiple choice questions
• Two different summary options
• Answer keys for all questions
This resource can be used throughout the entire week and could even serve as a Do-Now upon entering the room. It can be modeled and guided if your students need more assistance, and as they begin to get comfortable, you can start allowing them to take more ownership.
You could also use this resource as a take on Literature Circles for your students. In their groups, they will determine how the article is read (independently, in partners, as a group) and then they will discuss the article and as a group, they can determine who answers which questions and/or who can summarize. The questions can be split into tasks for each group member to answer and report back to the group.
There are so many ways to use this resource!
Here is one possible weekly schedule for implementation:
Monday – Students read the article and take notes on their own (or using whatever
close reading strategies have been taught).
Tuesday – Students reread the article, answering the guided questions in the margin.
Wednesday – Students answer the open-ended comprehension questions.
Thursday – Students answer the multiple-choice questions.
Friday – Students complete a written summary of the article.
