This lesson includes materials needed to review the progression of American government, from early colonial times under British rule through the ratification of the Constitution.
Students will start with a story sort of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” intended to review the “Too big – too small – just right” format of the story. They will then use this format as an analogy for the formation of American government as it exists today, tracing from British rule (“too strong”) through the Articles of Confederation (“too weak”) and ending with the Constitution (“just right”).
A student worksheet is included in this download which provides background, directions, planning space, and final draft for comic strips that students will create to show what they know about weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation, and how those weaknesses were addressed in the Constitution.
Also included are step-by-step teacher directions as well as an example and counter-example of what a finished product may look like.
