Students will turn & talk with a partner about several questions about government to access to prior knowledge that is a foundation for understanding America's first government. After each question, students will be then prompted to fill in guided notes. Then students will complete a primary source investigation in which they will examine excerpts from the Articles of Confederation and use them to determine if certain powers of government belonged to the state or national government under the Articles of Confederation. Finally, they will be prompted to answer some independent reflection questions that help them to wrap up their understanding of how the Articles of Confederation was structured.
Second Lesson: Simulation Activity to get students to experience the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation first hand. The simulation has 6 different rounds to demonstrate 6 different weaknesses. Students will be in "states" and will have different roles within their state. Then the teacher will guide them through a series of scenarios where they witness the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. After each scenario, they will then fill in a graphic organizer on the weakness and in their own words describe why it was a weakness. There is also a review game at the end.
