For U.S. government and U.S. History classes, the Articles of Confederation is often taught by simply talking about the weaknesses/problems they contained. This can be disengaging for some students. In this lesson (zip file), I have created a PowerPoint Presentation that discusses the basics of the Articles of Confederation, its provisions and weaknesses, and effects that followed from. In addition, imbedded in the lesson is a mini-simulation that goes in-depth on the issue of various currencies during the time period. Not only does this show a specific weakness created under the Articles of Confederation, but provides context for the notion of a weak central government as a major flaw. The simulation allows students to engage themselves in the lesson and builds on their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by answering debrief questions after the activity. This lesson can be used in both U.S. government and U.S. History classes.
