This is a specialty speech assessment that I designed several years ago after being repeatedly frustrated by a lack of precision with traditional articulation assessments for the "r" sound. It was designed to give clinicians additional information regarding the type of “r” errors that an individual makes. It is designed to supplement traditional assessments that may indicate difficulty with production of “r” as well as to support identification of which specific “r” combinations to remediate. Words were selected both for their ability to be represented with transparent symbols as well as to represent a variety of consonant and vowel combinations. For instance, the prevocalic words selected have 6 different vowels that follow the prevocalic "r."
The assessment can be administered in the context of labeling (tact) using the supplemental PowerPoint or in the context of verbal imitation (echoic). The clinician can use the supplied key to indicate the nature of the error and indicate the level of support needed for the assessment item.
The following items are included in this pdf:
1) Assessment instructions and suggested level 2 cues
2) Data sheet
3) Picture stimuli for all 54 "r" assessment items.
**Please note that this is not a standardized assessment and no verification of reliability or validity has been conducted. This is purely a tool designed for clinical practice to inform intervention and provide more information regarding the context of errors.
