Product Description
Q) How do you motivate a junior high or high school student working on articulation?

A) By speaking their lingo. Use terms borrowed from video games like "high score," "new target," and "next level" and actually show them the data!

Help them understand that you are not randomly or arbitrarily deciding how long they need to practice each target. This handy score card lets older kids SEE that they need to reach 80% (1-3 times) before proceeding to the next level.

This visual really helps older students take ownership of their speech progress and get invested in improving. It also helps students understand what level they should be practicing with at home. I have had many students tell me, "I practice all the time. I am always having conversations." I can easily show them that they are not at the conversational level, so that does not count as practicing yet. Then I remind them that the need to practice at their present level.

This form can also be helpful to show parents to help them understand the articulation therapy process, and why it is difficult to predict how long any student will be in therapy. It is also a handy way for therapists to see a synopsis of a student's progress ;)

Tip: I usually wait until they have already completed at least two levels in one word position before introducing this so that they will already have levels to check off (i.e., isolation, and word level for one position).
