This is a lesson plan that gives a whole class activity for students to learn about the various skills that students need to be an artist. It is good for the beginning of the year, or could be adapted for the end of year for students to assess the skills they have learned since the beginning of the year.
It includes a 2 page lesson description, and 14 signs/artistic skill descriptions to print out for the activity. The skills basically fall into 4 categories: Technical Skills, Creativity and Self-Expression, Responding to/Talking about Art, and Understanding Art History and Cultural Influences.
I did this at the beginning of the year for grades 9-12, and it helped to set the standard that Art requires hard work and that to be a successful artist you need a variety of all the skills. It helped to establish that everyone also has a different opinion about the most important skills an artist should have, and then then the students set goals based on some of the skills that were identified.
It is a good activity because it allows a bit of movement throughout the room, and allows for some class discussion.
The teaching part probably is about 20 minutes, and then activity of goal setting or assessment of learning could be as quick as 10 minutes or could be an hour depending of how much effort and time you want the students to take on making their goal list interesting.
