Artist-Teacher Jamia Weir shares a lesson idea using the public artwork of a contemporary artist she met personally at an artist residency in Vermont in 2017. It is important to share what artists in this day and age are doing in the art world. The art piece in this lesson is public art installation and interactive. The artwork they make in response is also public and hopefully interactive in that it has potential to be a teaching aid to other kids in the school.
Lesson is geared toward 3rd or 4th grade, but may be adaptable for a different age group.
Students will begin by looking at the artist's work for inspiration, brainstorming a list of words/homophones together, making preliminary sketches, and then going outside to draw on the schoolyard.
This lesson takes 45 minutes-1 hour and involves a mini, on-campus "field trip."
A perfectly simple, yet very enriching art activity for teachers or substitute teachers that may not have very much art experience, or that art teachers alike will enjoy.
