This lesson is Common Core aligned to the Literacy Standard across all grades. Students have to interpret figuratve language and connotative meanings. They will have to analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies. Langston Hughes wrote a poem describing how a wall closes in on a man's dream. The wall represents the inequality that African-Americans went through during the time of segragation. At the end students will have to write their own poem using this literary device.
