In this game (popular in many a Spanish class, but specific to the stem-changing verbs in Chapter 5 of ¡Así se dice! 1 here), students play in pairs to "defeat" their partners in Battleship. In order to find out where their partners' ships are, students must choose "coordinates" of a subject and verb, and then conjugate the verb correctly (and say what the sentence means in English). If they don't conjugate the verb correctly or know what they are saying in English, their partner gives them no information. If they DO conjugate correctly and know what they are saying in English, their partner lets them know whether they hit their ship or not (¡Me diste! or ¡Fallaste!). The first one to sink all their partner's ships is the winner. The instructions are included on the handout (1 page back and front) in Spanish, but for first time players you *may* want to explain in English (or project the board and show them very clearly how to draw their boats on the board as you explain in Spanish). The verbs included here are e->ie verbs from p. 170 (querer, empezar, perder, preferir, pensar) and o->ue verbs from p. 172 (poder, volver, devolver, dormir, jugar*). I find that this takes students a full class period, though you may want to have something to do for those who finish every activity quickly! NOTE: The top board on the handout is for students to draw their own boats, and the bottom board is for them to keep track of where they have hit/missed their partner's boats as they play.
